Malala Day

This is not going to be a style post today, but it is something that deserves attention.

Today I got to do arguably one of the coolest things ever – I was lucky enough to be one of the 500 youths from all over the world attending Malala Day at the UN Headquarters. Today was Malala Yousafzai’s sixteenth birthday and it was celebrated by presenting world leaders like Gordon Brown, Ban Ki-Moon & others with a Youth Resolution to make education a right for all children. This was Malala’s first time speaking since she was shot in the head by Taliban on her own school bus in Pakistan. They thought that a bullet could silence her and her friends from speaking up for their rights to an education, but they were wrong. Out of their attack came thousands of voices standing up for girls’ education.

Although Malala Day was a celebration of her birthday and her bravery, it was also a day to denounce all of the other attacks being made on students all over the world, which many people do not hear about. Malala speaks for the children who do not have voices. If you have a voice, use it. If you are lucky to live in a place where you will not be threatened for speaking, then speak up and speak loud. The 500 youths I spent today with were all united in their passion and determination to make the world a better place NOW, not later. The momentum that was created today has to continue into tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, until education is something every child can access.

Today’s post is very different than what I usually do on this blog and I just want to leave you with this one quote spoken proudly by Malala today:

“One student, one teacher, one book can change the world.”

Draped & Gold

Sometimes inspiration comes out of nowhere & to me, that’s one of the best feelings ever. I love when I’m just minding my own business, doing whatever it is at that moment and then stumbling upon something by chance that just totally sticks with you.

The other day, I was walking to work and I swear, I saw not one, not two, but THREE amazing drape-y skirts. And since that moment, I’ve been going through a bit of a drape-y skirt obsession! Because I do not have one of my own (yet!), I decided instead to put together this style set. I used three different draped skirts – (from left to right) one is styled for the fancy chick who likes to attend swanky events, one is styled for the casual chick who likes to look good while running errands, and one is styled for the chick who loves a good party. Screen shot 2013-07-11 at 6.16.43 PM

I also decided to use the Chloe & Isabel Metal Bib Statement Necklace for all three looks. I’ve probably talked about how C&I jewelry is perfect because you can literally wear it with anything, but the proof is in the pudding here! I could’ve gone with a quieter necklace, but I liked the contrast between the sharp gold metal (that almost looks like scales or armor) and the soft drapes of the skirts. I also picked these yellow shoes because, well, you could go with a similar gold strappy heel, but that would just be too expected! The yellow is bolder than gold, but it still goes with each of these three looks.

Flower Power

Howdy! It’s been a little while guys & I apologize, but things have just been so busy! I hope you’ve all been making lemonade out of the lemons that is this weather! And I hope everyone had a wondrous holiday weekend too!

Anyway, despite the muggyness, today was a bright, flowery day for me – sometimes when the weather isn’t so great, you gotta bring your own sunshine.

Today, I wore two of my favorite items of clothing ever – black skinny jeans (everyone needs to own at least two pairs, in my opinion!) and my favorite ever floral kimono. I don’t even remember where my jeans are from, probably Topshop or Asos, and I got my kimono from one of my go-to boutiques, LF, years ago. I love Topshop’s jeans, they are so comfy and much less expensive than their designer friends.

Talk about double-flower-power! I chose this Chloe & Isabel flower necklace to top off my outfit. It was just the right accent for the bright kimono because it isn’t too big or too small (do I sound like Goldilocks yet?)

You may be thinking “Who wears a kimono in this kinda heat?!” Have no fear, though, I am not crazy! My beloved jacket is actually paper-thin. It’s like a silky, chiffon-y cloud wrapped around your body! No wonder why I love it so much :).

What’s your favorite item of clothing & why? Tell me all about it in the comment section!

(I apologize again for some of the photo quality – I’ve been lazy and have been using my phone as my camera for too long…)

In case you all couldn’t tell already, I’m a teeny bit excited for the holidays. So, in the spirit of all these 4th of July themed posts, I also wanted to include a lil’ somethin’ red, white & blue (you can’t tell, but my nose ring is blue 😉 ).

This was my work outfit today & I must say I was feeling the holiday spirit already. My red & white floral dress is from Forever21 and my necklace is of course Chloe & Isabel! I kept it simple and wore this dress with plain jane black flats (mine are from Steve Madden). As you can see, my cats just had to make an appearance…

I also apologize for the quality of these photos – today was a looong day.
